French Marigold

French Marigold (Tagetes patula) is a compact, bushy annual native to Mexico and Guatemala, prized for its profusion of velvety yellow, orange, and bicoloured flowers throughout the growing season. It thrives in full sun and tolerates lean soils, making it one of the easiest bedding flowers to cultivate. Its strongly scented foliage is well-documented as a pest deterrent, making it a popular companion plant alongside vegetables.

Growing

Start seeds indoors 6 weeks before transplanting outdoors, once nights reliably stay above 10 °C. Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep in trays or modules at a soil temperature of at least 15 °C; germination occurs in 5–10 days. Pot on seedlings individually once the first true leaves appear. Harden off for 7–10 days in a sheltered spot before planting out at 25 cm spacing in well-drained soil in full sun.

Care

Water moderately and consistently; French Marigolds tolerate brief dry spells but flower best with even moisture. Deadhead spent blooms regularly to extend the flowering period and encourage bushier growth. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2–3 weeks once established. No staking is required for compact cultivars; taller forms may need light support in exposed positions.

Harvest

Cut flowers when the outer ring of petals has fully opened and colours are at their most vivid. For continuous cutting, harvest stems in the morning once dew has dried, taking the stem down to a lateral shoot or leaf node. Flowers remain productive until the first hard frost kills the plant. Harvest seed heads for saving once they have dried to a papery brown on the plant.

In the kitchen

French Marigold petals are edible and mildly spicy-citrusy in flavour. Use fresh petals scattered over salads, rice dishes, or egg-based recipes for colour and a subtle tang. Dried petals can substitute for saffron as a natural food colouring in soups, stews, and rice.

Storing

Fresh cut flowers last 7–10 days in a vase of cool water; re-cut stems every 2 days. Dried petals keep for up to 12 months in an airtight container away from light and moisture. Seeds stored in a cool, dry, dark location remain viable for 2–3 years.
